Two-Way Savings: Employees and Dollars, Developing Non-PMs into Serious Project Managers

Presentation Description

In 2010, Baker Hughes acquired BJ Services and started the integration of networks, technologies and people into one company.  At the same time, the Infrastructure Operations and Services Global Planning & Program Management (PPM PMO) found themselves in a situation with only 7 FTEs project managers to support all strategic initiatives worldwide.  To support growing demand, the consulting budget was escalating at an alarming rate to support the expanding portfolio; yet, year-on-year budget reductions were in place.

This presentation focuses on the PPM team’s innovative approach that created new careers for a group of non project management resources, while at the same time, ultimately addressing employee integration and career development, employee PM availability and budget concerns.  During the presentation, the decisions, obstacles and successes related to offering a project management career to selected individuals, some of whom had never considered being a project manager, will be discussed.  Learn how the decision to take this approach was made while developing an understanding of the root issues, concerns and long-term goals.  In addition, the programs to support the various training methods, boot camps, buddies, mentor and peer reviews implemented will be discussed from a success and difficulty to implement perspective.  The impact on the existing PPM leadership and employees will be discussed to focus on influencing factors and actions, while still maintaining a successful project portfolio of 300+ projects.
