IBM formed its Project Management / Center of
Excellence in 1996 to transform IBM into a project based business, and has
focused on a consistent approach in implementing the original charter
objectives, resulting in great value to the organization, to our clients,
and to our PMs. The result of
that effort yielded the PMO of the Year award in 2010.
In 2011, IBM revised the charter objectives for the first time and restructured the PM/COE to support a new strategy aligned with IBM’s 2015 Roadmap. This presentation will review the original structure and lessons learned from a decade of implementation experience, and then focus on our new structure implemented during 2011.
The new PM/COE structure is based on three areas of program activity – practitioner, organization, and stakeholder. Each of these three program areas leverage the value of our prior work and integrate functions required for our new strategy. The vision of the 2015 model is the driver behind the programs. Areas of focus include:
Mike's current position is Organizational Competency Program Manager in the IBM Project Management / Center of Excellence. In this role, he oversees a program to develop and improve the overall capability of IBM's project and program management globally through their methods, best practices, processes, intellectual capital, and assessment tools. This is a new program in 2011 that is part of the PM/COE's support of the corporate business strategy. The PM/COE relies heavily on communities of practice and volunteers from its 27,000+ global project management community to staff its project teams. Mike also leads IBM's global communities of practice for Project Management Value and PMO.
Mike is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology and joined IBM in 1982, having since held a variety of jobs in manufacturing, sales, and services. Mike has been working in the PM/COE since 2006 supporting IBM's project management needs globally. Prior to his tenure in the the PM/COE, Mike led a PMO overseeing IBM's consulting and services work for NY State government since 1998. Mike has been a certified IBM Executive Project Manager and PMP for over ten years, has 29 years industry experience, and is a member of IBM’s PM Certification Board. He is also currently serving PMI as a member of The Standard for Program Management - 3rd Edition Core Team.
